The Lumix GH5S in Arches NP, Utah

I took the GH5S with the Leica 8-18mm lens to the PSA Conference in the hope I would get to use it and capture some night skies.  It was mainly a bust most evenings except last night when the skies were clear.  The park is crowded with tourists even at night – and of course 30 – 40 at a time they climb out of busses and vans with bright flashlights – not a care that someone is trying to photograph the stars.

I was so happy to get a few shots that I really like.  The milky way is not ideal for this time of year but good enough to test the performance of the GH5S.  In my opinion, it gets 5 Stars.

Streets of Old Montreal

St. Sulpice Street after a downpour – Old Montreal. Panasonic Lumix GH5s combined with the Leica 8-18mm lens. Exposure triad f/8, 1.6 sec at ISO 160.

Not only is the Lumix GH5s a great low light camera, it has excellent dynamic range.  I should have used its native ISO of 400 instead of 160 to get an even better range.

TWiP – Your Itinerary – my chat with Host Rob Knight

It was a pleasure to meet Rob Knight at Photo Plus Expo the end of October.  Rob is the host for “Your Itinerary” on the ever expanding TWiP network.  Frederick van Johnson is sure building and building fast.  Thank you Rob for a wonderful discussion and thanks to the TWiP team for adding Your Itinerary to the mix.

Here is the text from the podcast page:

“Your Itinerary this week features my interview with published photographer, educator and workshop leader Shiv Verma. Shiv and I were chatting at the Photo Plus Expo in New York last month, and I thought you would be interested to hear where our conversation took us.

Shiv and I both lead photography workshops, and we both strive to offer something to our clients beyond locations and instruction. Anyone can take people to beautiful places and show them around. Providing a unique experience is what makes the difference between the average photo tour and something wonderful that clients will remember for the rest of their lives.

Shiv and I begin by discussing travel, photography and scouting locations, but we ended up trading tips for creating unique trips and providing great experiences for clients. Whether you’re planning a trip, looking for a photo workshop or planning a workshop yourself, I think you’ll find this week’s episode very interesting.”

Hope you enjoy and appreciate what TWiP is doing for the photographic community.

India Trip Report – 3

Common Kingfisher Preening - Image Dan Charbonnet

Landing in Jabalpur we were greeted by a very courteous group of Kingfisher staff and were soon on our way driving to Bandhavgarh.  We checked in at the Nature Heritage Lodge, a quick lunch an off to our first safari. Bandhavgarh is divided into three zones with only two being active.  The zone closest to the resort is TALA and the one farthest is MAGDI.  Our first safari was in Magdi the second zone.

Our first creature was a wild boar, actually a whole family of about 8 boars.  A number of Hanuman Langurs, Chital (Spotted deer), peacocks and peahens were in abundance as were owls, raptors and a numerous species of awesome birds.  The next three days were spent in the TALA zone – each day presented us with a variety of wildlife but unfortunately no tigers.  One had been located by an elephant scouting team and accessible only by traveling on elephant back.  We decided not to do the viewing and hope for better luck by jeep.

The fourth day’s AM safari was in the Magdi zone and did not yield any tigers but a potential as one of the jeeps had heard two tigers growling and crunching on a kill.  The next safari yielded an extended viewing of one of the two tigers.  The following day the safari was even better when each one did a 40 to 45 minute show.  With the success of viewing tigers we decided to extend another day in Bandhavgarh and reduce the Kanha excursion by a day.

Rather than showing individual images here is a slide show gallery representing the two zones in Bandhavgarh, scenes from the safari, a village in the area and its people:
