Lumix S1R test - Red Arrows - North American Tour
Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team Red Arrows are on a major tour of North America. This is the first in more than a decade. It is intended to promote the best of British and deepen partnerships .
The Red Arrows are on an 11-week North American tour that started in Halifax, Nova Scotia July 8 and will end in Rapid City, South Dakota Oct. 8, 2019.
The aircraft are BAe Hawk T Mk1, a two seater trainer jet that has been replaced by the new Hawk T Mk2. However, the Mk1 will remain in service for another 10 years. Like the Mk2, the Mk1 is a fully aerobatic, low-wing, transonic, two-seat training aircraft that is still used in a number of roles for the RAF. 100 Squadron, based at RAF Leeming.
The show started about 20 minutes later than expected and unlike the flight path that was released the jets flew a completely different route.
My aim was test the performace of the continuous focus capapbility of the Panasonic Lumix S1R in a high speed fly by. The lens I used was the Lumix S Pro 70-200 f/4. The aperture was set to f/8 and the shutter speed was 1/2000 to freeze motion. The ISO was set to auto and resulted in ISO 250 to 320 for the incoming shots and 640 to 800 for the outgoing images. The focus was set to continuous, drive mode on high and the focus area "Zone Oval".
There are two sets on images - 20 incoming and 20 outgoing. All images are from single bursts in the exact sequence and unedited. The RAW files were converted and exported to JPG using Capture One. As you will see from these images, the camera and lens performed exceptionally well in maintaing focus.

Fog X FLO -2
This was photographed at the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University located in the Jamaica Plain and Roslindale sections of Boston. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and is the second largest "link" in the Emerald Necklace. This was another test of the Lumix G9 and Leica 12-60 lens combination's weather resistance. Both camera and lens were soaked as a result of the spray from the high pressure water misters but performed flawlessly.This art exhibition runs through the end of October and is worth visiting.
Battle of the Barges - Boston Sept 5, 2015
After a very long time the Battle of the Barges returned to Boston. Piers Park would have been the ideal location but the crowds were overwhelming. Alternate East Boston location provided good views of the North End Barge.Please click on the image for a larger version.
Bridging the Gaps
June 12, I got to see the Greenway Project’s latest artwork a little over a month after its installation. Boston’s aerial rope sculpture created by the artist Janet Echelman is an exquisite sight at night. The ropes are over 100 miles long and the sculpture has nearly 550,000 knots. It is anchored to a few buildings and lit using multicolored led lights. A long exposure bridges the gaps between the ropes as I feel this signifies the coming together for all in this great city.
“My sculpture for Boston above the Rose Kennedy Greenway spans the void where an elevated highway once split downtown from its waterfront. Knitting together the urban fabric, it soars 600 feet through the air above street traffic and Pedestrian Park.The sculpture's form echoes the history of its location. The three voids recall the "Tri-Mountain" which was razed in the 18th-Century to create lands from the harbor. The colored banding is a nod to the six traffic lanes that once overwhelmed the neighborhood, before the Big Dig buried them and enable the space to be reclaimed for urban pedestrian life.” An extract from the artist’s statement.
Zakim - Three Views
Zakim Bridge is probably the most photographed bridge in Boston. Google search and one sees thousands of views of this iconic structure. The following three are my interpretations captured on August 23, 2014. These were shot from the park below the bridge. Please do click on the images to see a larger rendition.
Boston Skyline March 19, 2011 Super Moon Night
While cleaning up bring to make more room on my Macbook for the upcoming photo tour and workshop to India next week I came across this image. This was captured about a year ago on the night of the "super moon". I am looking forward to doing a lot of night photography and time lapse images on this trip. In particular the Taj Mahal - we will be in Agra the night after the full moon but hopefully will get some good opportunities.
