Back in Massachusetts after a great Alaskan Photo Tour
What an absolutely awesome trip - the weather was not the best but then that is what one has to expect this time of year. The Costal Brown Bears, Grizzlies, Whales and Wild Flowers were phenomenal as were many species of sea birds and sea mammals. Just started looking through a few images.
Anther and Filament of a Maple Flower
Anther & Filament of a Maple FlowerCanon 7D, 100 mm Macro with a 1.4x teleconverter and two full sets of extension tubes for a total of 136mm extension.
This is an image of one of the anthers of the maple flower from the image posted yesterday. Macro done well can be so much fun. Mirror lock up and twenty five images at f2.8 stacked using Helicon Focus.
Macro - Maple Flower Stack
Canon 7D, 100mm Macro lensExposure triad: ISO 100, f5.6. 1/3 sec.
Macro experiments - this is a 20 image stack of this maple flower. Used Helicon Focus to do the stack. The depth (front to back of the image) is 7/16 inch while the flower is about 1/4 inch. The magnification is approximately 1.6X. The image has absolutely no post processing or sharpening applied.
Beech Tree - Textured
Beech Tree - Backlit Leaves
While walking through the woods in my back yard I spotted this beech tree with just a few leaves that had not shed last fall. (We have a number of beech trees that did not shed.) Noticing the backlit leaves I captured this and then in post added texture and edge treatment using layers and blends. I found the simplicity captivating.
Red Breasted Nuthatch
Red Breasted Nuthatch
Canon 7D, 70 - 200 f2.8 ISExposure triad: ISO 3200, F8, 1/640 sec.
Walked out this dull overcast dreary morning on my deck to see this nuthatch. Liked the pose and the slightly open beak. This is the first year we are getting the Red Breasted Nuthatch in our back yard. Having shot this at ISO 3200 I used Nik Define 2.0 to clean up the background.
Hyatt Lane - Cades Cove
Canon 7D, 70mm Exposure Triad: ISO 100, F14HDR Bracketed at 1/15 1/5 and .6 seconds
Hyatt Lane was photographed on October 13, 2010. This was created with three exposures (RAW) and converted using NIK HDR efex Pro. A curves adjustment layer was used to selectively apply high contrast. Textures and edge effects were applied as additional layers.
Variation on the Tulip Theme
Canon 70 - 200, 2.8 IS lens - Exposure Triad f 5.6, 1/25 sec ISO 100
This is a stack of 20 individual captures focus bracketed and thenconverted to B&W using NIK Silver Efex Pro
This is the same tulip as posted before converted to B&W using NIK Silver Efex Pro and a preset with additional adjustments applied selectively. Other versions included Sepia and Tintype that i liked a lot but this was the best in my opinion.
Smoky Mountain National Park
A few images from the fall trip to the Smokys
Sunset in the Smoky Mountains
Grist Mill
Canon 7D, 16 mm, Exposure Triad: ISO 100, F14HDR Bracketed at 1/4, .8 and 2.5 seconds
This is a spot in the Smoky Mountain National Park that I wish I had brought along waders to go into the stream for a better viewpoint. This is a three exposure HDR image created using NIK HDR Efex Pro. An overall softening was applied - the effect was masked out from the mill that was then treated with some added contrast using curves and selective sharpening using NIK Sharpener Pro.Textures and edge effects added and selectively masked.
TULIPS - Stacked Image Capture
This is a version of the image shown below with textures and edge treatment.Canon 70 - 200, 2.8 IS lens - Exposure Triad f 5.6, 1/25 sec ISO 100This is a stack of 20 individual captures focus bracketed.
Looking to do something different with a few tulips that were a part on an arrangement brought over by a friend I decided on “Image Stacking” to attain great depth of field at a fairly wide aperture. A Canon 7D with a Canon 70 - 200, 2.8 IS lens - Exposure Triad f 5.6, 1/25 sec ISO 100 was used for the two images as shown below. Each image is a stack of 20 individual captures focus bracketed front to back.

Sanibel & Ding Darling
Monday Jan 18 - A two and a half hour drive to Little Estero lagoon in Fort Myers Beach yielded nothing. I was hoping to get an image of the white morph - Reddish Egret. On to Sanibel Ding Darling WLR - a few roseate spoonbills in the distance and the usual compliment of shore birds.
Green Cay Wetlands
Sunday January 17, 2010 It rained all morning but cleared up for a early afternoon trip to the wetlands. "...there is a sora in the weeds just past the first gazebo..." were the first words I heard as i approached the Nature Center. I have been trying to get a decent image of this creature but had failed on each prior attempt. Finally............
